The Cape Minor Ventilator: a functional analysis and clinical appraisal.
Functional analysis indicates that the Cape Minor Ventilator is predominantly a flow generator in the inspiratory phase, electrically powered, time cycled and volume pre-set. Study of methods of oxygen enrichment show that any desired Fioa froTM air to 90% oxygen can be achieved. Clinical evaluation suggests it to be a useful, small, powerful and inexpensive ventilator. The major defect is poor...
متن کاملA new venturi attachment for the Cape ventilator, to facilitate control of FIO2.
The Cape ventilator (Penlon Ltd) still remains one of the most widely used ventilators in intensive therapy units (ITU). However, when low fractional inspired oxygen concentrations (F IO2 ) are prescribed, particularly when associated with low minute volumes (V̇ ), the required supplemental oxygen flow is small. Flows less than 2 litres/min are not uncommon. For example; an F IO2 of 0·35 and a V̇...
متن کاملThe ventilator circuit and ventilator-associated pneumonia.
Historically, the relationship between the ventilator circuit and pulmonary infection was accepted as fact, without any scientific evidence. Hence the term, "ventilator"-associated pneumonia. Recent evidence, however, has demonstrated that the major sources of pneumonia in the ventilated patient are colonization of the gastrointestinal tract, with subsequent aspiration around the endotracheal t...

Probing with the ventilator
Neurally adjusted ventilatory assist operates through recordings of electrical activity of the diaphragm (EAdi). Barwing and colleagues found increases in EAdi in weaning-failure patients, although the values were not significantly different from weaning-success patients. Future studies will need to carefully control for the considerable biological noise evident in EAdi recordings.
